  • A medical illustration is a form of biological illustration that helps to record and disseminate medical, anatomical, and related knowledge.
  • Medical illustrators produce resources such as photography and graphic images for professionals involved in patient care, teaching, education and research. There are four specialist areas:
  1. clinical photography;
  2. graphic design;
  3. medical art; and
  4. videography.
  • Medical illustrators are categorised as healthcare scientists and are employed primarily by hospitals, medical schools, research establishments and specialist publishers.

Eligibility:

After 10+2 student needs to obtain a bachelor’s degree, preferably with concentrations in science and art. Available degrees include a bachelor’s in scientific illustration, biomedical art or pre-medical illustration. After completion of the bachelor’s degree, a 2-year master’s program in medical illustration is the next step. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs should accredit the master’s program

Job prospects:

  • Medical illustrators may be employed in medical schools, hospitals, research organizations, publishing companies, advertising agencies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, or large medical centers with teaching and research programs. Many medical illustrators are free-lance artists that contract out for their services.
