On June 18th, 2015, a young talented First Semester Student of Physics – Master Adnan committed suicide on the pretext of being declared failed by the competent authority of the Govt. Polytechnic College, Srinagar. And after re-evaluation of the paper, it was found that he had actually passed it with good grade. In this context, I would like to draw the kind attention of competent authority , especially Director Board of School Education ,Since 10th class Examination is the first step of the ladder for the higher Education.
It has become a routine that some students commit suicide after the results are declared because of two main reasons:
- i) they are declared failed
- ii) they get less marks than expected
This is a great loss to the nation as the young generation is the future of the country from whom it is expected that they will shoulder high responsibilities in near future, and not that their parents and elders shoulder their coffins. So we can not let it continue like this. The preventive measures is the need of the hour. As is a well known fact, “to err is humane”. Only Prophets and Angels are exceptions. These omissions and commissions have happened in past and will continue to happen in future. Some preventive measures have been previously taken but have not yielded any good results.
I have few Suggestions which I believe if implemented may help in reducing or eliminating the risk of suicides being committed by the students to large extent. The suggestions are:
BOSE should include a topic in the Matriculation Syllabus about the functioning of Board of School Education, focussing on things like;
- a) what is re-evaluation
- b) what is re-checking
- c) are these facilities also available with other institutions e.g Kashmir University/Polytechnic/Professional colleges / Entrance tests etc.
- d) what are un-fair means and what are its punishments
- e) which instruments/ gadgets are allowed in examination halls and which are not.
- f) How to go through the question papers, which question to attempt when there is “ Or “ between the two questions. Can a student attempt both, what if both are correctly answered or you get less marks in one, and more in other
- g) the important one; if a student fails or gets less marks than expected by him what he has to do. Get his papers re-checked or re-evaluated; what is the time span, what will be the effect on his results if his marks increase or decrease. Does the Board publish corrigendum in the daily news papers. Also questions on qualification /marks required for entrance examination, K.A.S, I.A.S and other competitive exams where marks obtained in Board/University exams do not matter much.
I strongly believe these shocking incidentals are the result of no-information or mis- information of the students who consider the results declared are the final one and cannot be changed.
