Literati from all over Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday demanded that Kashmiri should be introduced and made compulsory in 9th and 10th classes.
“We must start a sustainable and continuous struggle to make Kashmiri a popular language among the new generation,” said noted writer and poet Mashal Sultanpuri, addressing the inaugural session of the 37th Annual Kashir Conference of Adbee Markaz Kamraz (AMK) Jammu and Kashmir held at Sheikh-ul-Alam Conference hall here.
Prominent Civil Society member Dr Altaf Hussain said Kashmiri language was facing a global challenge. “The demand for classic status to Kashmir language was genuine as it would preserve our identity.”
An important resolution was passed at the session which demanded that the government should immediately make Kashmiri language compulsory in the 9th and 10th standard.
Secretary Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages, Dr Aziz Hajini said that Kashmiri language was facing onslaught from many years.
Deputy Commissioner Budgam Mir Altaf Ahmad also addressed the session asking Adbee Markaz to take up issues of culture and traditions also along with the language.
President Adbee Markaz Kamraz J&K Dr Shujaat Bukhari said Kashmir language has ample resistant literature. “Some people say that Kashmiri writers have closed their eyes to the political and human rights violations. However, they are misinformed or less informed. Kashmir poets have contributed a lot towards it and we should be proud of them,” he said.
On the occasion, AMKs bilingual Kashmiri ‘Prave’ was released. Other books which were released include an Urdu translation of ‘Dictionary of Kashmiri Proverbs’ by former bureaucrat and writer, Kachu Asfandyar Khan from Kargil, ‘Kath Cha Tatte’ and ‘Chonche poot’ by Zarief Ahmad Zarief, ‘Yousuf Shahi Chak’ and Abysmal by Sohan Lal Kaul, ‘Gaash’ by Dildar Ashraf, ‘Badal Tharre Hind Gulab’ by Bashir Manngwalpori and ‘Phalwen Gultour’ by Abdul Khaliq Shams.
Discussion session on “Prose Writing in Kashmiri” was presided over by Prof Zaman Azurdah and Rafiq Raaz was also in the presidium. Prof Bashar Bashir read out a detailed paper on the subject which invoked discussion. Salim Salik also took part. Young writer Deeba Nazir presented her short story “Tschandav” (Search). Vice-President AMK Farooq Rafiabadi presented vote of thanks.
Besides other, the session was attended by former Chief Information Commissioner, G R Sufi, Dr Rafiq Masoodi, Prof Nusrat Andrabi, MLA Langate Er Rashid, Nazir Azad, Nasir Mirza, Mehmood ur Rashid, Showkat Shafi, Gowhar Geelani, Agha Syed Muntazir Mehdi and Prof Farooq Fayaz.
