A first-timer has emerged the tricity topper in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services exam. The results were announced today. Navya Singla, a resident of Panchkula, got AIR 102 while trainee IPS officer and SHO of the Sector 20 police station, Panchkula, Anshu Singla Jain, is second. The third rank has been grabbed by Priyanka, a senior auditor in the office of the AG, Haryana.
However, none from the tricity has made it to the top 100 this year. Last year, three had made it to top 100 while in 2015, six had done so. Navya Singla, whose father is a doctor and mother a teacher, said she had also topped the country in the commerce stream in Class XII in 2012. She had appeared for her Class XII exams from Bhavan Vidyalaya, Chandigarh.
A relieved Navya says, “The exam is a tough nut to crack, it really stretches you.” She says her family’s support was paramount and helped her clear the exam in one go. Ask her about her schedule and she says instead of weaving studies around her daily routine, her life was woven around studies.
Navya says an exam like this cannot be cracked if one is not self-motivated. “You cannot clear it if you are trying to do so for your parents or some other reason,” says the topper. She adds that one really “has to want it and not feel any pressure”.
Anshu Singla Jain was recently posted as the SHO of the police station in Sector 20, Panchkula, as she is a trainee IPS officer. She has cracked the exam thrice but has not been able to climb to the top rung. Wife of a serving IPS officer, Jain does not plan to take the exam again.
The third rank went to Priyanka Tyagi, a senior auditor in the office of the AG, Haryana, in Chandigarh. It was her fourth attempt and she is happy that she finally cleared the exam. She says she had to find time in office to prepare for the exam and mostly studied from the Internet via her smartphone.
4 others have city connection
Sachin Kumar Singhal (AIR 193), Shikha Khosla (AIR 439), Prerna (AIR 471) and Damanbir (AIR 911) also cleared the exam. However, they are not city residents but took coaching or have studied here in the past. Shikha did her BDS from Chandigarh and took coaching here and lives with her husband in Karnal. Sachin is a Delhi resident and took coaching for interview here.
