Experts at this year’s The Hindu EducationPlus Career Counselling here on Sunday asked students to take up a career of their choice without succumbing to peer and parental pressure.
Shivananda Prabhu, Professor of Surgery, Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru, said that he felt that there was a need to introduce an aptitude test for admission to medical education on the lines of the aptitude test being conducted for admission to architecture course. With this, those who had feel for medical profession could enter it.
He said that those who opted for medical education should love medical profession from their bottom of the heart.
Giving an example, Dr. Prabhu said that some radiologists were not ready to treat patients. It meant that something was wrong in the medical profession.
He also spoke on allied health sciences.Rajesh Gratian D’Souza, Professor and Head, Department of Civil Engineering, PA College of Engineering and also Administrative Officer of PA Educational Trust Institutions, asked students to cultivate the reading habit, especially of books without unnecessarily wasting time on the social media. He asked students to make a comprehensive study of the college, such as its faculty strength, their quality, infrastructure, whether the college is accredited or not before making a decision whether to join it or not. “No college can claim 100 per cent placement. It is highly impossible,” he said.
Mr. D’Souza asked students and parents to think beyond the next 20 years. He asked students to be sure of before opting for an engineering branch such as its future prospects and scope in pursuing it further in the postgraduate level.
Syed Aejaz-e-Ahamed, education counsellor and trainer, CIGMA India, spoke on other career opportunities.
Mr. Ahamed said that the legal profession was also a much sought-after profession with enough opportunities. If one can’t afford to become a commercial pilot due to financial reasons, serving in the Indian Air Force offered an opportunity to become a pilot, he added.
