He is wheelchair-bound, holds pen with his mouth to write, and aspires to become a physicist like his world-renowned idol Stephen Hawking. Seventeen–year-old Tuhin Dey Saturday inched a little closer to his dream as he cleared CBSE Class 10 exam scoring 88 per cent.
Affected by arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), a disorder that develops during a woman’s pregnancy and reduces the mobility of baby’s joints, hands and legs, Tuhin had appeared for the exam from Central School at IIT-Kharagpur in West Midnapore district of West Bengal. He shifted to Kota a couple of months ago to prepare for competitive exams.
Tuhin’s mother, Sujata Dey (38) said officials from the school informed them about the result. She said that subject wise marks were not known yet.
Tuhin, who consistently scored more than 90% marks till Class 9, was expecting over 95% marks, Sujata said.
“Since Tuhin did not participate in the co-curricular activities due to his disability, his school could send only B2 Grade to board due to which his overall percentage fell down,” she added.
Tuhin’s reaction could not be sought as he was in coaching classes.
Going to school and appearing for the Class 10 examination was not easy for Tuhin, who is 90% disabled. The school was 14 km away from their home and his parents ferried him to the school on his father’s motorcycle.
“Tuhin wrote his Class 10 exam without help of a writer or using extra time given to students with disabilities,” Sujata said.
Tuhin, who is taking coaching for IIT-JEE at Allen Career Institute in Kota, has been awarded twice for his exceptional talent.
“Tuhin got the National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement in 2012 and Best Creative Child Award with Disabilities in 2013 from President Pranab Mukherjee,” his mother said.
“Since his birth in 1999, Tuhin has undergone more than 20 surgeries. But that did not deter this boy from studies,” Sujata says, adding that he’s an “extraordinary” student.
His mother gave up her central government job in education department to secure Tuhin’s future. His father Samiran Dey has a real estate business.
The couple from West Midnapore will stay in Kota for next two years as Tuhin prepares for IIT entrance. Tuhin doesn’t have siblings.
In Kota, Allen Career Institute has waived off Tuhin’s full fee – ₹1.18 lakh a year.
